Like many other cities in the world, Belfast hosts many bars that appeal to different crowds. Here's a list of excellent bars and restaurants that cater to the young, hip, party crowd.

(1) The Botanic Inn
More popularly known as "The Bot," The Botanic Inn is probably the most famous bar in Belfast, a favourite of young and old alike, whether locals or visitors. Not only is this the biggest bar in Northern Ireland, it is also the busiest. Located at 23-27 Malone Road (Tel: 9050 9740), The Bot is a fitting reminder of Malone Road's grungy student past. The mood is wild and dancing in the recently-refurbished Record Club on the second floor is non-stop, bolstered no doubt by the allure of Northern Ireland's first video wall, which also shows major sports events. Try to check in on Wednesdays for their "Pinch of Stuff" night, when craic and good music fill the air. The Bot offers traditional, fresh food at excellent value and nightly entertainment throughout the week.

(2) The Northern Whig
Want to immerse yourself in a place that is stylishly European? The place to visit in Belfast is The Northern Whig, an elegant bar set in magnificent Georgian printing works. Its most striking feature is a group of three huge granite statues of Communist workers, said to have been purchased by the owners in Prague after the fall of Communism. Located at 2-10 Bridge Street (Tel: 9050 9880), The Northern Whig has soothing interiors, with sofas and armchairs in chocolate and café au lait colours setting the tone for a laid-back atmosphere. The Northern Whig is an excellent venue for lunch, brunch, dinner or drinks. When night falls, some of the best DJs in town turn this smart and cosmopolitan venue into a premiere party place where hot music and house cocktails flow. Things heat up considerably by several degrees on Fridays and Saturdays.

(3) Auntie Annie's Porterhouse
Located on 44 Dublin Road, Auntie Annie's Porterhouse features live music downstairs and swinging disco music upstairs on most nights of the week, especially during weekends.

(4) Limelight/Katy Dalys/Spring and Airbrake
Located at 17 Ormeau Avenue, Limelight/Katy Dalys/Spring and Airbrake combine to create a fantastic haven for alternative music lovers. These three swinging places are adjacent venues that open up into one another to provide wall-to-wall live alternative music.

(5) The Rotterdam Bar
The Rotterdam Bar is one of the oldest bars in Belfast yet it's a favourite hangout for the younger set and for the young at heart. Located at 52-54 Pilot Street (Tel: 9074 6021), this is an exquisite place oozing with character and great personality.

(6) Cathedral Quarter Quartet
There are four bars lined up at the Cathedral quarter that count among the best in Belfast, specially among the so-called alternative crowd. The first is The Spaniard on 3 Skipper Street (Tel: 9023 2448), a small bar that boasts a fantastic and friendly group of regulars. Then there's The John Hewitt on 51 Donegall Street (Tel: 9023 3768) where live music is the standard fare every night, including jazz music on Fridays. There's also the popular Duke of York on 7-11 Commercial Court (Tel: 9024 1062), which is packed with people every night, especially on Thursdays when they offer traditional music. Finally, there's Whites Tavern on 2-4 Wincellar Entry, one of the oldest and most storied bars in Belfast, founded in 1630. Whites Tavern has a cosy enclave for drinking downstairs and a jumping alternative disco upstairs, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights when the place is filled to the rafters.

(7) The Menagerie Bar
Although The Menagerie Bar is hidden away on 130 University St (Tel: 9023 5678), it is a fun place with a fantastic atmosphere. Tucked away near the Holiday Inn Express, The Menagerie Bar looks dilapidated on the outside and clearly has seen a decline in its popularity, but all this is part of its current allure and, most importantly, its funky reputation still remains.

(8) The Fly
The Fly is one of the premiere party places in Belfast and its staff are wholly dedicated to having fun, fun, fun all night long. Located just off Botanic Avenue at 5-6 Lower Crescent (Tel: 9050 9750), The Fly spans three floors of non-stop partying. It more than lives up to its reputation as a fabulous place to dance the night away. The Fly is open six nights a week and is absolutely packed by 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, so guests are advised to come early so they are not disappointed.

(9) The Globe
The Globe is one of the most popular bars in the university area, with great food and drinks at reasonable prices. Located at 36 University Road (Tel: 9050 9840), The Globe also features one of Belfast's best karaoke in town as well as a lot of big-screen sports and well-loved DJs.

Although it is most commonly seen in sweet recipes, it does not taste sweet at all. A stalk on its own has a slightly tart flavor, which contrasts well with the sweet flavor of desserts.
It is a good source of vitamin C and a powerhouse source of vitamin K, as just 3 1/2 ounces of the red stalks has over a quarter of your daily recommended dose of vitamin K.
While the stalks are quite tasty, the leaves are to be avoided at all costs because they are toxic.
The plant thrives in cooler temperatures, which it is known as a spring harvest crop.
95 percent of the plant is water.

Sometimes gifts that you purchase are not as personalized as you would like. They do not quite seem to fit the idea you had in mind. For these times, the only thing to do is "do it yourself". You will have the gift exactly fitting the theme and the person that you want.

So now, you know you want it personalized but what can you create. Some of these items take just a few moments and others may take several days. But that's part of the giving too.

-For our gardener friend, plant seeds in your garden or in container and nurture them until they are big enough to be planted in your friend's garden.

-Go to the local ceramic store and find mugs, bowls, plates, and vases in fired green ware. Buy paint and paint your friend's favorite flower or name on these items. Or leave them plain and paint clear glaze and have the shop fire them for you

-Rubbing rose petals to release their scent can create rose oil for her bath. Place them in a bottle with mineral oil, cloves, and zest of lemon. The rose make it pretty and the oil will soothe her skin in her bath.

-There are so many different bread baking mixes available now. Bake a few different flavored loaves and put them together in a basket.

-Nothing has the flavor of fresh herbs. Put together an Herb Basket with little pots of growing herbs. All it takes is a pinch of a leave to add flavor to every dish.

-Buy pretty tiles and glue corkboard on the bottom for pretty coasters.

-Buy pretty, unusually shaped bottle and fill them with white wine, apple cider or red wine vinegars. Add a few herbs from your garden. All choices are good, just pick and choose as would as if you were cooking. Pop in a cork, add a label and tie a pretty ribbon on the throat of the bottle.

-If you sew, you probably have a lot of scraps left over. Use these to make pretty potholders and mitts. Bind the edge with bias tape in a matching or contrasting color.

-When strawberries are in season, dip them in melted white chocolate and brown chocolate pieces to give a tuxedo effect. Chill and put in a napkin lined basket.

-If you knit or crochet, make a pretty scarf for the cold months. Or use ribbon and knit or crochet a placemat for your friend's table.

There are a few days each year that many fathers dread: tax day, the annual colonoscopy, the trip to the in-laws and yes, Valentine's Day. The argument against Cupid and St Valentine usually unravels thusly: A man can work 50 hours a week, put dinner on the table, pay the taxes, visit the in-laws and raise a family, but if he forgets a card and some chocolate on a certain day - he's a bum.

February 14th, which begins like any other day, can cause great pain for the forgetful father. Ever since the day was cursed by a wicked witch out to punish the males of the species (as some origin-stories suggest). But much like many of your pickup lines, complaining about Valentine's Day just isn't going to work. Here are a few tips to get you through it:

1. When it comes to gifts, think generic. A locket inscribed with "To My One True Love," can be used way more often and with many more women than one scrawled with your lady's name.

2. Taking her out to a nice dinner precludes fast food, movie theater candy, pizza delivery and pop tarts. It's the thought that counts, but we're pretty sure gastrointestinal tolerance counts for something as well.

3. A further note on dining: a burger and a six-pack is not a seven course meal. (But it should be)

4. Excuses get you nowhere. It's far better to admit you forgot to buy Valentine's chocolates than to imply sensitive information about your wife or daughter's weight. Correspondingly, a handful of dandelions are no substitute for a dozen roses.

5. For the single father's out there - Happy Independence Day! Get some red, white and blue firecrackers and let the neighborhood know just how single you are.

The party of the year is right around the corner and if we have learned anything over our past holiday experiences, avoiding the exuberant cost and chaos of restaurants and night clubs is an absolute. This only means however the party has shifted to the home and why not? With the right planning you can easily pull off the biggest party of the year without a sweat!

1. Invitations

A successful party begins with a proper invitation. The invitation process may take more time and possibly inflict a little more cost but it is a sure way to know the exact number of attending guests. Invitations also eliminate the party crashing folk that would otherwise be sure to arrive! You will also be much better prepared for food, drink, and transportation this way.

An invitation can be your best friend during these stressful occasions and they are not limited to paper. Who needs stamps when you can use your computer! Create your invitation on-line. There are several websites that will do all of the work for you. Simply create your invitation and e-mail it to all of your guests. It is wise to personally call your invitees to be sure they received the e-mail invite.

2. The Menu

When planning a cocktail party you absolutely have to have great food. This does not mean however that it all has to be prepared by you! Search for recipes in your favorite magazines or on-line and find the perfect hors d'oeuvres and petit fours for your party. Then all you have to do is attach these recipes to your invitations!! It's a brilliant idea to help take all of the pressure off of you the host.

When your guests prepare the food at home you have so much more time to focus on everything else. This idea works better than potluck because you are still in control of the party. You know what food will be attending so you can better prepare for it with appropriate serving utensils, toothpicks, napkins, and trays.

It is wise to take your plan even further by estimating the service time for your cold and hot dishes. Remember you may only have one refrigerator for you party so beware of the dishes that you choose to serve!

3. The Bar

Again another great way to take this party to another level is to specify in your invitations which alcohol or non-alcoholic beverages to bring. Martinis are the drink of choice these days so why not ask your guests to bring a bottle that will contribute to your cocktail recipes?!

Champagne or sparkling wine is an absolute must for New Years Eve party's so be sure to provide plenty of bubbles for the evening. Although bubble is fantastic on its own, spice it up with a splash of flavored liquor for a new experience. Such cocktails as Champagne cocktail, and Kir Royals make a perfectly festive treat for your guests.

Don't forget to have plenty of glassware and of course lots of prepared garnish for your New Years Eve cocktails!

Here are a few martini recipes to help get you started!

Chocolate is a man processed product, while the strawberry is a natural product. Chocolate is made from cacao beans fermented for several days then dried out in the sun. The beans are then roasted and winnowed. The chocolate bars sold at supermarkets are made when the inner nibs of the cacao beans are heated to melt the cocoa butter and then ground to a paste. Strawberries are one of the yummiest and juiciest fruits around the world. They are used in making desserts, juices and shakes. It is loved by both children and adults for its mouth-watering scent and delicious flavor.

As fat content is present in chocolate, a whitish gray material will form on its surface when it has been exposed to warm temperature for a long time. The heat drives the cocoa butter out of the chocolate and forms a white coat on the surface. This is one reason why the chocolate turns white and it is also known as fat bloom.

One wants to know why strawberries appear bright red from outside and pinkish from the inside. This is because of the natural pigment called anthocyanin which is produced naturally by plants. It can be found in the leaves, stems, flowers and fruits. The pigment may appear red, blue or purple depending on the acidity of the plant part. Too much excess of anthocyanins in the fruit's skin will make it appear a rusty red or brown instead of red.

The pigment is also classified as a flavonoid which is a chemical that gives flavor to fruits and plants. As a flavonoid, anthocyanins are seen as derivatives of anthocyanidins which include pendant sugars in the composition. This is the reason which makes the fruit's flavor naturally sweet.

The strawberry is rich in anthocyanins and it does not only give color to the fruit but they are powerful antioxidants which is the reason why fruits with colorful skins and pulps are considered nutritious. According to research, anthocyanin is potential, protects health and effects against the development of diseases like cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes and bacterial infections.

If a chocolate turns white, another cause is also either too much humidity or cold temperature. If the chocolate is stored in an excessively humid or a very cold place like the fridge and then quickly exposed to a warm temperature, there can be a sugar bloom. This happens because the surface of the chocolate condenses with moisture. Sugar crystals remain on the surface after the moisture has drawn the sugar out of the chocolate forming a white coating.

Even if the chocolate looks unappetizing but it is still okay to eat as long as it's pure and not filled. Fortunately a bloomed chocolate is not poisonous. Once the bloomed chocolate has been melted and cooked, it will still be good enough to eat.

It is that time of the year again. You know, when the weather cannot make up its mind. HOT COLD HOT COLD. You dress to make a frontal attack on your local shopping mall. Good grief, look at those lines and those are just to get in through the entrance doors. By now, perspiration is running down your face in rivulets. Do you want to face bodily injury trying to get through the mobs at the toy store? Special on suspenders? Oh, look! Polka-dotted scarves made in 17 colors, none of which even begin to complement the others.

Blink! A light goes on over your head, pulsating inside the proverbial cartoon cloud. That's right! If we can ever find our car again we can go Christmas tree shopping at the corner lot. The smell of pine...the sticky sap on your fingers. A veritable symphony of smells and textures. This looks so good I think I just might have my afternoon snack right here. Try some crunchy pine needles.
Tinsel to decorate your Christmas tree was invented in Germany around 1610. Genuine silver was used; machines had to be designed to pull the silver out in exceedingly narrow strips. In spite of being hard-wearing, the tinsel strips were not practical because of a rapid rate of tarnishing. Surprisingly though, real silver was used up through the mid-20th century. Can you imagine being the poor servant back in Victorian times whose job was to polish the strips until there was no trace of tarnish?

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their children were adored by their subjects. Because of a photograph of the Royal Family standing lovingly around their Christmas tree, it became the height of fashion to have one's own tree. These decorated trees were clamored for by British and East Coast American High Society.

The Addis Brush Company of America made the original brush Christmas tree. This type of artificial tree was much stronger than the feather tree and was able to hold heavier ornaments and decorations. However, it did have a somewhat objectionable aspect in its mode of manufacture - at least to the more fastidious and squeamish among us - as it was made with the same equipment as used in the manufacture of the company's regular toilet brushes!

Animal Crackers, cookies beloved by generations of children, were imported in the late 1800s, from Great Britain to the United States. The boxes holding the cookies were shaped like Barnum's circus-train cars and with their string handles, were intended to be hung as decorations on the family Christmas tree.

The next time you get an urge for a snack, try nibbling on your Christmas tree. Several parts of pines, spruces, and firs are edible. Vitamin C abounds in the needles and pine nuts, or pine cones which are very nutritious.

Two to three Christmas seedlings must be planted in order to be able to harvest one viable adult tree.

Traditionally an American Christmas flower, the poinsettia is native to Mexico. Called the "Flower of the Holy Night," it was brought to the United States by Joel Poinsettia in 1829.

United States President Theodore Roosevelt was an ardent conservationist and environmentalist, banning Christmas trees wherever he lived, including the White House. His children managed to sneak Christmas trees of their own into their bedrooms.

With the dawn of the millennium came the existence of the heavy-duty white metal Christmas tree. Meant for strictly outdoor use, it had hundreds of built-in miniature lights that did not have to be untangled every Christmas season, making for happy homemakers.

The first known Christmas tree dealer was Mark Car. In 1851, he dragged two overloaded sleighs, brimming with just-cut trees, from the Cat skills in upstate New York all the way to New York City, opening the first retail Christmas tree lot in the United States.

One acre of Christmas trees allows for the daily oxygen requirements for 18 people.

Unhappy news for the environment: An artificial Christmas tree can last for six years in storage and on display, but no matter how hard you try to break it down for recycling, it will last for centuries in a landfill. Let's hear it for live trees!!

Chocolate fondue fountains lend an air of festive celebration to any occasion. The excitement you generate with these machines will keep your guests coming back for more. You can use them to liven up various parties and events.

For home celebrations, tabletop chocolate fondue fountains work fine. You will have to set up the fondue fountain and get the chocolate ready. Whether you are using white or dark chocolate, it needs to be heated before it is added to the fountain.

Once you have melted the chocolate, you can put it into the fountain base and switch on the motor. The auger will send the chocolate flowing up to the top of the tower. Then, it will pour down the tiers in an appealing cascade. When the chocolate gets back to the base, it will start its journey all over again.

Look for chocolate fondue fountains that are easily cleaned. You will be putting a lot of chocolate into the fountain. It can be difficult to clean up again if you get a machine with a lot of little parts that get covered in chocolate. The best solution is to get a fountain that disassembles to make it even easier to get into the inner parts to scour them out.

It is important to have chocolate fondue fountains that keep an ideal, steady temperature. Otherwise, your chocolate will not flow smoothly, or it might scorch. The perfect day deserves the best machine that is available.

You might want to use chocolate fondue fountains for weddings. You can get one for an extended family and pass it around to all the cousins when it is their turn to get married. Guests who are regularly invited to the family weddings will look forward to the events even before anyone mentions the chocolate fondue. They will already know it is going to be there.

An individual family might choose from the different chocolate fondue fountains to have for themselves. They can use the fountain for any event that takes place in their home. A graduation party will come to life when the graduates are given this unusual treat. High school grads will feel very grown up, having chocolate fondue fountains for their own party.

Businesses can also use chocolate fondue fountains for their special meetings. Group events will be friendlier when everyone is sharing in the experience. People will choose from strawberries, marshmallows, or other treats to dip sociably into the fountain. It can create a camaraderie that keeps people talking throughout the evening.

Chocolate fondue fountains can bring a higher level of enjoyment to business and social functions. People will remember the day, partly because of their time spent dipping and eating treats from the fountain. These machines make any party special.

Ask almost any American elementary student why the Country celebrates Columbus Day and they will immediately recite "In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Historically, this is true. Christopher Columbus did set sail in 1492 in order to discover new lands for the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. The sailing party consisted of three ships: the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria. Columbus had sailed to far away lands before including Guinea and Iceland. In this trip, it was the aspiration of Columbus to discover the East Indies. When Columbus spotted the new lands, Columbus thought that he had, in fact, reached the East Indies; which are a group of islands located off of the coast of Southeast Asia. Instead, Columbus had came ashore in the Bahamas, and later Cuba and Hispaniola (now known as Haiti); all of which are off of the coast of the Americas - a long way from his original target.

The first official Columbus Day celebration was held in Colorado in 1905 and after 1920 the celebration became an annual event. There were, however, many less official Columbus Day celebrations held before the State of Colorado declared the official holiday. For example, one of the first recorded celebrations of Columbus Day was a ceremony held in New York City in 1792. The Columbian Order organized the occasion to honor Christopher Columbus and the 300th anniversary his landing in the islands of the Bahamas. The 1866 the Italian population of New York City sponsored another celebration of Columbus Day on October 12th. This celebration was based upon Columbus' discovery of Americas. This movement within the Italian-American population spread across the country and in 1869 a similar celebration called "C-day" was held in San Francisco.

President Benjamin Harrison had a commemorative Columbus Day holiday in 1892 which was intended to honor the 400th year anniversary of the voyage. In 1937 President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed that October 12 would be known as Columbus Day. The October 12th date was changed in 1971 when Congress made Columbus Day a Federal public holiday that occurs the second Monday of October regardless of the date.

Recent years has brought about a great deal of controversy regarding Columbus' expedition and the discoveries he made - especially in light of the clear miss of the targeted area of exploration and the natives of the Bahamas region being turned into slaves. However, as a direct result of Columbus' attempt to discover the East Indies, scholars were able to gain a better understanding of just how large the Earth really was. Additionally, Europe and Spain became exposed to the Americas which resulted in trade opportunities and colonization of the new world - opportunities that still act like a beacon that draws people from all over the world to the Americas today.

By now, as the days approaching Christmas are fast upon us, the Holiday Trivia Elves (better known as librarians) at the Smithsonian Library in Washington, D C, are ready to bounce from wall to wall in an attempt to keep up with all the requests for information, great and trivial, about this popular holiday. Watch out. I just saw a couple of them staggering against the shiny marble walls. They must be going into Trivia Meltdown, a malady seen quite often this time of year. Get them some eggnog and gingerbread, quick!
When you think about Christmas and love, the first thought that pops up in your mind is to stand shyly (and hopefully) under the closest doorway with a sprig of mistletoe hung overhead. Such a romantic tradition for so many generations, it has to hold the #1 place in popularity. Guess which one? Yep, that long, lingering kiss. But guess what else? Mistletoe is actually a partial parasite, growing on branches or trunk of a tree or able to grow on its own - take your pick. The common name of mistletoe is drawn from bird droppings. "Mistel" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for "dung," as in bird poop and "tan" translates to "twig". I have your interest now, don't I?

Get your knives and forks out for a feast around the world. Roast goose is on the Christmas platter in England, pigs in Germany, while the people in United States love turkey.

Banks used to have a Christmas Club each year. They were first opened in 1905, allowing their patrons to deposit a preset amount of money each month, to be used around Christmas time for gift shopping. I think I had a magnanimous amount of $3 per month stashed away for that special something.

There are two schools of thought about which is the busiest shopping day of the year. The majority of shoppers think the Friday after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of shopping yet another faction of the economy thinks that the busiest day is either the 5th day or 10th day after Thanksgiving.

When Charles Dickens was writing his famous "A Christmas Carol," he stopped many times while trying to find the proper name for his little hero. Before settling on Tiny Tim, he considered and discarded Little Larry, Puny Pete, and Small Sam. No great loss there.

Charles Dickens originally wanted Scrooge to say "Bah Christmas" instead of the famous phrase "Bah Humbug" known throughout the literate world.

Throughout the course of the Christmas buying season in the United States, Visa cards alone are used 5,340 times per minute. Ka-Ching!

Turkeys were popular for Christmas dinner in Victorian England. Many of the birds were bred in Norfolk and then needed to be moved to market in London. In order to accomplish this transport, the turkeys were dressed in booties (!) made of leather or sacking and then the turkeys were walked to market. The boots served as a barrier between their feet and the frozen mud of the road. However, geese feet were only protected with a layer of tar. Is this haut couture or what?

Talk about one for the record books. There is a written mention of a huge 165-pound game Christmas pie from Medieval England. Nine feet in diameter, its ingredients included 2 bushels of flour, 20 lb. of butter, 4 geese, 2 rabbits, 4 wild ducks, 2 woodcocks, 6 snipes, 4 partridges, 2 neats' tongues, 2 curlews, 6 pigeons, and 7 blackbirds. Point of culinary curiosity: assuming a diner ate around the bones and pulled off the fur and feathers, was the pie still ridiculously heavy and large for an average group of diners (let's say 50 or so) to finish the concoction before spoilage set in? And what did really happen to all those inedible accoutrements? Did the Royal Furrier have a workshop set up immediately outside the castle kitchen? Truly, the discarded bits and pieces from the pie were copious enough to set up a system of cottage industries, from furs to wear against the cold to the sinews needed to stitch those furs, from feather-adorned hats to shoes made from the hides. The involvement of various workers had to be astounding.

Slot machines are the most popular casino game in the world, both at land-based casinos and on Internet gambling sites. This article reveals some little-known facts about online slot machines.

Generally, slot machines account for about 70% of an online casino's income.

The main categories of online slot machines include classic 3-reel slots, video slots, fruit machines, and progressive slots.

Classic 3-reel slots are computerized versions of the slot machines that were invented by Charles Fey in 1887.

Classic 3-reel slots are perfect games for the beginning slots player because of their easy and straightforward format.

Video slots are modern 5-reel slot machines. Many of the newer video slots games have bonus features, such as free spins.

Fruit machines, also known as Amusement with Prizes games, are UK-style slot machines. They are very common in British pubs.

Online progressive slots accumulate deposits from their players from a number of online casinos to create jackpots that grow by the minute.

Online progressive slots can be 3-reel or 5-reel, have bonus features, and have multiple pay-lines. For example, Major Millions was a 3-reel, 3 pay-line slot game when it was first launched. Now there is also a 5-reel, 15 pay-line version.

Cash Splash was the first online progressive jackpot. It was launched in 1998 by Microgaming software.

Mega Millions, a Microgaming progressive slot machine, is the only progressive jackpot that has ever paid out jackpots exceeding $1,000,000.

There are now over 150 companies that provide software solutions for online gambling casinos.

The major software providers for the online gambling industry include Microgaming, Playtech, Realtime Gaming, Boss Media, Rival, Vegas Technology, Parlay, and Cryptologic.

Microgaming developed the first "genuine" online casino software in 1994. Cryptologic and Boss Media were established in 1996, Parlay and Realtime Gaming were launched in 1998, Playtech was founded in 1999, Vegas Technology was established in 2005, and Rival was launched in 2006.

The majority of online slot machines have a unique theme, such as success and old money, secret potions and jewels, Indians and squaws, bees and honey, pirates and ships, hillbillies, American diners, science fiction, chocolate, Las Vegas showgirls, witches, romance, mythology, and Christmas.

It is estimated that Microgaming casinos account for about 70% of online gambling revenue.

Pay-lines at online slot machines range from 1 to 100. Single pay-line slots have been around since slot machines were invented back in 1887. Microgaming introduced Cashapillar, its first 100 pay-line slot machine, in May, 2008.

The average payout percentage is defined as the percentage of winnings to wagered amounts. For example, if there are $97.69 in winnings for every $100 wagered, the payout percentage is 97.69%. Likewise, if there are $93.45 in winnings for every $100 wagered, the payout percentage is 93.45%. Payout percentages for online slots range from 89% to 99.5%.

Online slots come in both download and no download versions. The download versions are more popular because there is a wider selection of games to choose from.

Online slots games have better odds than those at land-based casinos.

Tomb Raider is probably the most successful online slot machine game to date. Tomb Raider's success is partly due to its association with the popular computer game, The Tomb Raider Series. A sequel to the game, Tomb Raider - Secret of the Sword, was introduced April, 2008.

So there you have it, 20 little-known facts about online slot machines. Whether you play slots online or at a land-based casino, remember to gamble only with the money you can afford to lose. Decide beforehand how much you wish to spend, and don't exceed your spending limit should you lose. Finally, have fun and quit while you are ahead.

Most of us equate the word diet with calorie reduction. This is understandable, since most diet marketing is relentlessly focused on offering consumers low-calorie options.

Unfortunately, this way of thinking is categorically wrong. The simple fact that any nutritionist will verify is that everyone is on a diet. Even those who do not wish, or do not need, to lose weight are on a diet, as are those who are increasing their weight. Dieting has nothing to do with calorie reduction, and everything to do with calories choices. The foods you 'choose' to eat determine the type of diet you are on.

Indeed, to the digestive system and the intestines, a candy bar and a stalk of celery are neither seen as junk food nor diet food. They are both seen as simply food. The candy bar leads to a rapid glycemic reaction and the production of fat cells. The celery does not. Still, the body does not label one as junk and the other as diet food. In fact, everything that the body ingests, it tries to use in the best way that it can.

However, outside the neutral intelligent internal body systems, the term diet persists in our often rather misguided external world of advertising, marketing, and diet plans. As such, we can group diets into two categories: deliberate and accidental.

Deliberate diets are designed with specific requirements, such as those engineered to lose weight, to gain weight, and to maintain weight. Deliberate diets are typically what people refer to when they use the catchall term 'diet'. This is in contrast to the other kind of diet that is called the 'accidental diet'. Accidental diets have no requirements, and march to a simple chant: eat whatever, whenever, and the body will take care of itself.

However, despite the fact that there are two terms for diets - deliberate and accidental - there is a denominator that unifies them both: protein. All diets, even those that are accidental, require protein.

Protein, and the amino acids that comprise protein, are essential for life itself. Every system within the body depends, directly or indirectly, on protein. In fact, because protein regulates hormones, some cases of depression or anxiety are actually instigated and perpetuated by either a lack of protein, or the body's inability to fortify its neurological system with this critical macronutrient.

Yet for those on a diet -- and that includes everyone -- the importance of protein is more pragmatic. Many deliberate diets such as the Atkins(TM) diet and the South Beach Diet(TM) restrict carbohydrates, while other restrict fats. That leaves protein. Protein is the common link between all nutritionally-sound diets. But is it also the missing link? Or, is protein readily accessible and readily present in the foods we eat?

Oddly, most American meals and snacks are protein deficient. Indeed, complete protein is absent from 6 of the top 10 foods eaten in the US, and absent from all 10 of the most popular snacks (see chart at end of article). This shortage of protein in the American diet refers both to the absolute amount of protein, which is recommended to be a minimum of 50 grams per day, and the kind of protein as well. The healthiest protein is a "complete protein", which includes all 19 amino acids. However, even people who are ingesting 50 grams of protein may not be eating complete protein. As such, these people are sometimes unwittingly suffering from some form of protein malnourishment, and experience symptoms that include drowsiness, digestive problems, emotional disorders, and other adverse physiological effects.

So to achieve a balanced diet -- regardless of the diet regimen - an appropriate level of complete protein must be present in each meal. This, of course, is easier said than done for most time-starved people. Regrettably, these people are more than time-starved; they are oftentimes macronutrient starved, as well.

Pennsylvania-based Protica Research has developed a protein beverage to meet the protein needs of busy consumers, dieters, diabetics, students and others. Profect® is an advanced beverage that supplies 25 grams of protein in less than 3 fluid ounces. It is packaged in an unbreakable test-tube-shaped vial and can be consumed in 2 or 3 seconds. Akin to a multivitamin, Profect can be taken immediately before a snack or a meal to fortify it with 50% of the US RDI of protein and the complete spectrum of water-soluble vitamins.

Profect can turn an otherwise "empty-calorie" snack into a complete meal. Its macronutrient and micronutrient profile fills the nutritional void found in most meals and snacks. It does this by combining with the carbohydrates and fats generally present in most foods and thereby completing the 'nutritional trifecta' required by the body for nourishment.

Of course, this is just the first step. A truly healthy diet must also understand how to properly eat the other members of the macronutrient kingdom, including fats and carbohydrates. Actually, since so many diets revolve around the fluctuation of carbohydrates and fats, it is essential to understand how to properly consume these two sources of body fuel in order to achieve optimal health. Yet which fats and which carbohydrates reign supreme? Which ones add weight, and which ones actually help the body's metabolism function more effectively? The answers to these questions will be eye opening to most dieters, and they will form the dieting cornerstone for many consumers. You will find the answers in the second part of this two-part article entitled 'The Macronutrient Balancing Act'. If you do not have a link to the next article, you can find 'The Macronutrient Balancing Act' on Protica's web site at protica.com/publications

Christmas has many exciting and fun traditions around the world. Here we take a look at some fun insights and celebrations that you could even put into practice with your family and friends this festive season to create more fun and festive cheer!

- In Italy they place their presents in a bowl called 'The Urn of Fate' which is placed under the Christmas tree. Then each family member takes it in turn to select a present. Presents can often have a theme or a color. Also presents are often purchased with a specified amount that can be spent which all goes towards making the purchase of and the receiving of the gift more fun and exciting.

- Interestingly Spain also has a custom called 'The Urn of Fate' but it's a little different. Their old custom gets family and friends at the Christmas gathering to write their names on slips of paper and place them in the urn. 2 slips of paper are drawn out at a time. Custom says they are to be devoted friends for the coming year. It is said that a little dabbling and match making occurs creating a lot of fun!

- The Dutch have a great sense of humor. They love to hide presents inside a pudding, a sausage or potato or wrap a small gift in a huge parcel They love the element of surprise and come up with all kinds of creative ideas to surprise each other each year!

- Iceland have 13 Santa's which are kind of more like mischievous elves. They begin visiting homes from the 12th December and by the 25th they have all arrived. Each character likes to make their presence felt in mischievous ways, such as door slammer awakens sleeps by slamming doors and the candle beggar snatches candles. Often they leave a gift behind in the shoe of the children and sometimes a potato if they think someone needs a little reminder to be good!

- Also in Iceland between 5pm and 10pm on Christmas eve there is no television broadcast. So this ensures that family time is spent as family time without distraction and they can feast and open and give presents with full attention to each other.

- In Scotland they practice 'Sowans Night' Christmas eve. The tradition calls for family to burn branches of the Sowans tree as they declare and release any ill feelings towards any family or friends or colleagues. It's a beautiful ceremony of forgiveness and letting go.

- In Denmark at Christmas they have a mischievous elf called Nisse who makes his appearance whilst having fun and playing jokes on people. He wears a red bonnet, red stockings, white clogs and gray woolen clothes. It is a loved tradition for the fine folk of Denmark to leave out a bowl of porridge on Christmas eve to entice him to keep his jokes within limits. However it has been reported that the porridge along is no longer working. So each year new extra treats are topped onto Nisse's favorite treat 'porridge' hoping to distract him and keep them in his good books so he'll be less mischievous on his annual festive visit.

First of all start with an empty stomach. This has never been too much of a stretch for me, I am always willing to sample chocolate before dinner. Next, have the chocolate at the recommended 66-77 °F. Finally allow the chocolate to sit in your mouth for a few moments. This will help to release the principal flavors and aromas. After the chocolate has set for a few moments chew it slightly to release the secondary aromas. Resting the chocolate against the roof of your mouth will allow all the flavors to be enjoyed.

Chanukah is one of the English spellings for the word Hanukkah, which is a traditional Jewish holiday celebrated in Kislev (December/January). It is also known as the Festival of Lights, and celebrates the miracle that occurred upon the victory of the Maccabees against Syrian invaders, when a single days ration of oil kept the Menorah burning for eight days. The following are traditional Chanukah games.

Dreidel Game

A dreidel is a four sided top of Jewish origin. Each side has a Hebrew letter: Nun, gimel, hay, and shin, which is an acronym for ""A great miracle happened there."" The dreidel is a game played by children during the eight days in which Hanukkah is celebrated.

Divide into groups of four to six. Give each player an equal number of foil wrapped chocolate coins. Each player puts a foil covered coin into a central pot and gets a turn spinning the dreidel. Depending on the side on which the dreidel lands, each player can win the coins.

The following is a list of the sides and the reward or penalty for landing on this side of the dreidel during their spin:

o Nun: 0 coins received, next player spins

o Gimel: Player takes it all

o Hay: Player takes half

o Shin: Player puts a chocolate into the pot

Each time the pot runs empty, every player will add a chocolate coin and the game can continue.

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and it is time once again to start preparing for the fall season. Besides dreaming of succulent turkey and the trimmings, this means readying holiday dinnerware, organizing cookware, polishing silver, and searching for new and exciting recipes and great holiday trivia! Liven up your Thanksgiving holiday with Turkey Trivia #1 - Turkey Facts, and Turkey Trivia #2 - Cranberry Facts.

Turkey Trivia #1 - Turkey Facts

Did you know...
The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans who taught the Pilgrims how to survive off the environment.

There are many thoughts how the turkey got its name. One such theory was that Christopher Columbus thought the bird looked like a peacock and since the East Indian word for peacock was "tuka," this bird's name transitioned from "tuka" to "turkey." Makes sense. And on the other hand, when a turkey is scared, instead of saying "gobble, gobble," it makes a "turk, turk, turk" sound. No brainer here. Take your choice.

Wild turkeys occasionally spend the night up in a tree.

A female turkey is called a hen while the male is called a tom.

A hen does not say gobble, gobble. Instead, they say click, click. That must be some sound fest when both sexes are simultaneously striving for attention.

A mature turkey has approximately 3,500 feathers.

Wild turkeys can run 25 miles per hour and fly up to 55 miles per hour. However, commercially raised turkeys cannot run at all, or fly.

The heaviest turkey ever weighed toppled the scales at 86 pounds.

A turkey can have a heart attack if it becomes overly startled; turkeys living near an area where the sound barrier was broken dropped dead from the shock.

Turkeys have a fantastic sense of hearing but have no external ears. Hmm! Are the ear holes hiding somewhere under those 3,500 feathers? Only the turkey knows for sure but he is not telling.

Turkey Trivia #2 - Cranberry Facts

Did you know...
The Pilgrims called today's cranberry a "craneberry" because its blossoms looked like the head and bill of a Sandhill crane.

Cranberries were carried aboard American whaler and mariner sea crossings in an attempt to prevent scurvy.

Many people believe cranberries live on water alone, but fascinatingly enough, they are grown on vines in bogs originally created by glacial deposits. A fence is installed around the entire growing area of a bog, in an attempt to prevent the cranberries from drifting away. They are covered with a layer of sand which acts like a blanket. Cranberries can survive only in these stringent conditions.

If undamaged, a cranberry vine can survive more than 150 years.

If you drop a load of cranberries on a declining slope, the firmest and freshest berries can bounce as high as 4 inches while going downhill. Soft and bruised berries will not bounce, therefore separating themselves from the quality fruit.

Fruit nibblers beware! Raw cranberries are sour and bitter. Be sure to stir in some sort of sweetener; mixing in sugar or honey should help considerably.

As well as bouncing, cranberries can float using the same internal air pockets that help propel ripe cranberries off the ground.

I have, in past articles, given you a history of chocolate. I have since then uncovered some more fun information about other of our confectionery delights. It isn't just limited to chocolate, you know!

Upon some research, I uncovered something really interesting about jelly beans. I know that (regardless of age) we all grew up with them. In fact, they are so old that jelly beans were reportedly advertised as early as the 1860's when William Shraft claims to have sent them to Union soldiers as treats during the Civil War!

Licorice, a favorite among movie- goers, was found (in licorice root form) in King Tut's tomb. It was used as a cure-all for everything from

curing "thirst and hunger" to curing kidney disorders. And just about everything in between, including stomach problems and coughs. Licorice in root form, was used during the middle ages to help with food poisoning, and was so popular in 1305 that it was taxed in England to help repair the London Bridge!

Another one that had an interesting background were candy cigarettes, also referred to as candy sticks. You could blow the powdered sugar so that it looked like you were exhaling smoke and then, of course, you would wrap the cigarettes under the sleeve of your T-shirt

Among the "tough, cool" kids of the 50's, 60's and 70's, it was definitely a fun thing to do, with it's red tip (did you know that on the bubble gum version the wax paper wrapping simulates a filtered cigarette?) They are still available with brands being sold in Spiderman, Popeye and Tom and Jerry varieties. What a way to go for those who didn't really want to smoke (mostly due to parents wrath!), but wanted to look cool anyway!

Straight from that into really smoking? Had to cover your breath somehow...so enter Sen-Sen mints. Still available today, they were marketed as a breath perfume, created by T.B. Dunn company literally to mask the breath of smokers.

Okay, so I would be re-miss not to add one chocolate fact, since that remains far and above most peoples favorite. Let's take 3 Musketeers.

In 1932, 3 Musketeers was packaged with three (hence the first part of the name) chocolate bars: one vanilla, one strawberry, and one chocolate (hence, the musketeers.)

Are you a lover of soup and soup recipes? Besides the great taste and variety that soup has, it also has a wide array of uses in our histories of the world. Here are some known and little-known soup facts that you might find interesting. I did!

o Can you believe that Americans sip over 10 BILLION bowls of soup every single year! That's a lot of soup!

o Every year, 99% of all American homes buy soup - turning it into a $5 billion business. Whoa! I'm in the wrong business!

o Who eats more soup?. Men or women? Well, for a typical lunch, women seem to be more than twice as likely to eat soup as men. Statistics say, 9.6% vs. 4.0%.

o When was the earliest evidence of our ancestors eating soup? About 6000 BC! And guess what kind of soup it was? Hippopotamus!

o So, in the late 1700s, apparently the French King was so enamored with himself that he had his royal chefs create a soup that would allow him to see his own reflection in the bowl. Sheesh! But as a result, consommé (clear broth) was born.

o Since we're talking about the French here's another interesting tidbit of soup lore that I had to include on this Soup Facts page. In the French Court of Louis XI, the ladies' meals were mostly soup. Guess what the reasoning was? They were afraid that chewing would make them break out in facial wrinkles! If this were true today, it would put plastic surgeons out of business!

o This one cracked me up! And yet, it's a fact that intertwines fashion, eating utensils and of course, soup! Here it is: Why did thin soups became all the rage in Europe during the 17th century? The spoon was invented. (How did they eat soup before the spoon???) Why was the spoon invented? Because of the latest fashion trend: large and stiff ruffles that the men and the women of the high courts wore around their necks. (I bet that's how clowns got their ideas for their costumes!) The design of the spoon was to accommodate wearers of those large ruffles and keep themselves from getting dripped on!

o The first liquid nourishment most babies get is the milk from the mother's breast, often times called "Milk Soup."

o Frank Sinatra always asked for chicken and rice soup to be available to him in his dressing rooms before he went on stage. He said it always cleared his mind and settled his tummy.

o Another famous person who loved soup was Andy Warhol. He told someone that he painted those famous soup cans because its what he had for lunch - every day for 20 years!

o Soup has always been known as the curative for any ailment of the heart, mind, soul and body... and this old Yiddish saying says it best... "Troubles are easier to take with soup than without."

o "Of soup and love, the first is the best." - from an old Spanish proverb. (Sometimes, I think that is very true!)
